MISSIONS BEING COVERED…
"Nature Connect" Missions (2)
Become a Wildlife Photographer … Ages: 5+years
Ever fancied yourself as a young David Attenborough? Ask a grown up if you can borrow a camera, find some local wildlife and get snapping! Why not hold a wildlife photographer of the day competition with your friends? You could even use your favourite photograph to create a gift card for someone you love.
Animal Scratches …Ages: 5+ years
Look closely at the native trees in your park. Can you see animal scratches on the trees? Try to work out what caused the scratches – could it be a koala climbing up to find a good place to rest, a possum looking for dinner, or maybe a tree kangaroo? Look up in the branches, and check if any animals are home
"National Parks Association of Qld" Missions (3)
Bush Bird Watcher …Ages: 5+ years
First find a hidden spot in the bush where you can sit quietly. You’ll notice that birds begin to fly and perch closer and closer to you. Watch as they hunt for food, feed their babies, bathe and sing. Try to spot differences in size, shape, colour and behaviour. Which birds are king of the bush? See if you can identify them.
Scrunch and Sniff …Ages: All
Breathe deeply while you are bushwalking. Think about what you can smell. Try to find a smell that will immediately bring this bush track to your mind. Try crushing some fallen leaves in your hands, and smell your “forest perfume”. Which perfume do you like best?
Splash, sink, soak …Ages: All
If your adventure leads you to water, stop to throw a small object in, listen to it ‘plop’ and watch the circular ripples. If the water is flowing, hold a ‘leaf boat’ race. If it’s safe to do so, take off your shoes and explore barefoot. It’s cooling, relaxing and fun!
"Healthy Waterways" Missions (3)
Creek investigator …Ages: 0 to 9 years
Collect a bucket of water from a creek or dam or lake. Look carefully at the water – what do you see? Are there bugs with long legs? Or perhaps a tadpole or bits of plants that grow in the water? What colour is the water?
Explore the creek …Ages: 0 to 9 years
Rock hop across a small creek. Drop a rock into the creek – what do you hear? Can you make a splash?
Leaf boat competitions …Ages: 0 to 9 years
Why not get your friends together for a leaf boat competition. Find a piece of bark or large leaf that will float on top of the water. Attach a stick and another leaf as the sale. Put them in a creek and see who has the fastest leaf boat.
"National Park" Missions (1)
Park picnic …Ages: All
Pack your lunch, grab a rug and let’s have a picnic! Take all of your supplies to a national park and find the perfect spot to set up. Do you have any visitors that want to steal your sandwich? If there are ants around watch them steal the crumbs and follow them to see where they go but don’t get bitten! Advanced manoeuvre - Ants are really good at carrying food! How much can they lift? Get permission to use the internet and learn more about ants, can you find out how much they can lift?
